New York, NY – June 20, 2012 – Cordoba Initiative is pleased to announce that Imam Feisal, chairman Cordoba Initiative and author of Moving the Mountain, will speak in Detroit on July 7 sponsored by the Islamic Studies Program at The Westin Hotel in Southfield, Michigan.
Imam Feisal will address “Creating an American Muslim Identity”, a topic that is central to the work of Cordoba Initiative and an issue evocative from his new book Moving the Mountain published by Free Press and went on sale nationwide May 8. Imam Feisal delivers an open and honest clarion call, inviting readers to a deeper understanding of the role of moderate Muslims in America and in the world. Drawing on his own experience as the son of a prominent Imam struggling to define his Muslim identity, Imam Feisal explores the issues effecting American Muslims today, presenting a fresh perspective and providing a common ground for Americans of all faiths and beliefs in a post-9/11 world.
The College of Liberal Arts & Education at University of Detroit Mercy is developing a program in Islamic Studies under the leadership of Dr. Achmat Salie.
“We are so pleased to have Imam Feisal participate in our awareness building campaign for our Islamic Studies Program, says Imam Achmat Salie. “I can’t think of anyone more appropriate to help solidify and expand our program in Detroit.” It is anticipated that the Islamic Studies Program will formally begin in Fall 2012. The program will be supported by an endowment raised from individual donors and institutions in the Detroit Muslim community and beyond. The event at which Imam Feisal is presenting will be a fundraising event on July 7, which begins at 11:00 am, to considerably expand and solidify this new Islamic Studies Program which has a mission towards global service-learning purposed for inclusive excellence and emotional tolerance.
Imam Feisal is the visionary behind Cordoba House and the Chairman of Cordoba Initiative, an independent, multi-faith, and multi-national project that provides innovative solutions to those areas where conflict between Islamic and Western communities undermines local and global security. He is a leading Islamic thinker and author of several books, including his new book Moving The Mountain, Beyond Ground Zero to a New Vision of Islam in America on sale now and is available for order in both hardcover and digital formats.
Imam Feisal has received numerous awards including Time magazine named him among the 100 most influential people of the world and Arianna Huffington’s “2010 Game Changer” Award, and was listed as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2010 by Foreign Policy magazine.
Imam Feisal is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Center of New York, of the Interfaith Center of New York, and a member of the World Economic Forum.

His book will be available for purchase and the event will be followed by a book signing.
