Our Mission

Founded in 2004, the Cordoba Initiative is a multi-national, multi-faith organization dedicated to improving Muslim-West relations.

We Have:

Held seven annual convenings of a global group of scholars representing the full spectrum of Islamic legal and political thought. We have (1) achieved consensus on the definition of Islamic good governance and; (2) created an index to rate countries’ compliance with that definition.

Become a leading voice on moderation through our media appearances, Op-Eds, lectures, and publications, including books and articles. Our work has been cited over 50,000 times in the media.

We Are:

Creating a Space – Cordoba House – for the voices of moderation to flourish and be heard.

Cordoba House is to be a space where people gather to identify ways to reverse the downward spiral of fear and mistrust that is fueling extremism on all sides.

This Will:

Shape an American-Muslim Identity – which will have a moderating effect on the Muslim world.

A strong American Muslim community – confident in its identity as both wholly American and wholly Muslim, will inevitably be moderate.

We Are:

Building Bridges & Countering Islamophobia…

…by elevating the discourse in America on Muslims and presenting a pluralist, tolerant and compassionate vision of Islam.

And Are:

Bringing the message of good governance to the Muslim world

Through the Shariah Index Project we have created a blueprint for how democracy will take root in the Muslim world.

The moderates are transforming from the silent majority to a resounding chorus.
